Welcome to the Disability Access and Inclusion Fund: Showcase 2023!

Convenors Professor Bronwyn Hemsley and Professor Simon Darcy and the 2023 awardees will be sharing their Disability Access and Inclusion funding project experiences and outcomes so far with you. We’ll also be joined by Professor Kate McGrath, the sponsor of this UTS funding opportunity.

Professor Kate McGrath will speak about the purpose of the Disability Access and Inclusion Fund and how this ties in with the UTS strategy of being more inclusive and supporting inclusive research projects.

Mini-talks:

Grant recipients will share their project's inclusive practices, outcomes, impact so far, and future directions. Their presentations will help grant applicants in 2024 see the wide range of possibilities that this fund can support

Prof Bronwyn Hemsley (Speech Pathology, Faculty of Health) with Peter Simpson: The appearance of Assistive Technology in the reports of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability: An inclusive research agenda.
Dr Doris Li (Faculty of Design, Architecture, and Building). “Graduated compression stockings to prevent deep vein thrombosis: problems with the existing compression stockings' design regarding fit, comfort, function, and aesthetics.

Professor Bronwyn Hemsley, who also mentors grant recipients and teams towards more inclusive research, will also present information on “Fostering Inclusive Disability Research at UTS: Fund Guidance 2024.”

This is an in-person event so it is important to register now so as to book your place. If you are attending in person, please let us know your accessibility and dietary requirements. The venue is fully accessible. Please indicate your accessibility requirements when registering.

There is also an online component for people unable to attend, with live streaming as well as recording to play later. The online component will feature captioning and Auslan sign language interpreters. Presenters are encouraged to use plain language, reduced jargon, and use of visual supports, to increase information accessibility for people with intellectual disability.

We encourage interested delegates to network with award recipients, whether in person or online after the event (through email, social networks). Contact details of the presenters will be provided to foster any follow-up from the community.
