    Event description

    UTS Rapido & Marintec Hackathon

Welcome aboard the Marintec and UTS Rapido Hackathon at Tech Fest 2024, hosted at UTS. In this event, we aim to use gamification with AI and Machine Learning, and other software solutions to tackle a pressing education/training challenge faced on board Australian naval ships.

Scene-Setting: I am an operator on board a naval ship, an alarm sounds... part of the ship’s system needs attention. What system is that alarm associated with? What do I need to know about that system? How to I address it? I can’t get it wrong... There’s a lot to consider in a short space of time.

Solving any ship-based issues correctly and efficiently is critical. The environment dictates minimum room for error and expediated problem resolution. It’s hard for crew members to commit all correction procedures to memory, so a ship’s crew will inevitably rely on technical manuals, policies, procedures and safety instructions to ensure they solve the problem correctly. But, given the nature and severity of the alarm, it may feel too long and laborious to find the instructions they need. What creative software solution could help to identify, address, and solve the issue when an alarm rings, to improve this experience?

This hackathon will deploy software techniques to help transfer manual based procedural knowledge in real time, in an engaging way, with the goal of correct understanding of actions and procedures while improving knowledge retention. Your creative solutions will help develop new visual and data solutions to solve the problem. The challenge will be to use software solutions to deliver pages of mostly text based / schematic content into an engaging training methodology quickly and in real time.

Industry experts will be on hand to help you understand the problem, the ship environment, consider any dependencies and how to capture outcomes in an engaging way.
