As online environments evolve rapidly, and with Australia’s new social media age restrictions now in place, questions about how the law can better protect young people have become increasingly pressing. This session brings those issues into focus through a conversation with Kate Chaney MP, Associate Professor Marilyn Bromberg (“M”) and PhD student Noelle Martin, exploring minimum age requirements for social media use and the legal tools available to safeguard children from harmful algorithms, among other related topics. This evening is a special law CPD event, but people outside the legal profession are welcome to attend.

Speaker Biographies:

Kate Chaney MP is an independent Member of the Australian House of Representatives, representing the electorate of Curtin in Western Australia. Kate gained her law degree from UWA before practising in mergers and commercial agreements, and as well as at Redfern Legal Centre on credit and debt matters.

Associate Professor M Bromberg is the Associate Deputy Head (Community and Engagement) at the UWA Law School and a practising lawyer. Her research focuses on social media and the law, Body Image Law and Health Law. She is the author of Body Image Law: Revolutionising Images of Thin-Ideal Women.

Noelle Martin is one of the world's leading advocates on deepfake abuse. She is a lawyer, PhD Candidate at the UWA Law School, survivor, and award-winning activist. Her work has been recognised through the Young Western Australian of the Year and the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list.
