Description

Jonny Scholes' is a multidisciplinary artist with work that encompasses installation, sculpture, painting, robotics, new media and street art, each linked through an interest in urban exploration, geopolitics and the rapid integration of technologies into society. Informed by his knowledge in coding and digital systems, Scholes’ work draws attention to the abstract nature of hidden digital mechanisms that now influence our social systems and shape the physical world.

Scholes recently co-presented a work called “Blocked Duwar” at the Sydney Biennale in 2026 and exhibited as part of Hobart Current in 2025. He is represented by Despard Gallery in Lutruwita and is working towards his first solo exhibition with them.

Scholes also founded Vibrance Festival, a street art festival which later transitioned into a public art management company. Through Vibrance, Scholes has developed, managed and commissioned over 100 public artworks in Lutruwita/Tasmania

This talk will explore where Scholes' practice originated, how ideas are formulated and details on specific artworks.

Working at the intersection of painting, urban exploration and technology Jonny Scholes creates work outdoors, online and in his studio. Influenced by many contrasting themes, his artwork explores ideas including politics, abstraction and futurism. 'I once saw the varied nature of my practice as a weakness and spent years rejecting that by trying to find a singular focus, in no small part because I thought the art world would require me to. Recently I've come to learn that variety can be embraced, and it now defines my way of working.' - Scholes https://jonnyscholes.com/
