An excellent lunch will be served. The meeting will close around 3:00pm.

Improved Networking is to be implemented by starting the meeting at 12.15 and have committee members act as host to introduce people around. This will be “Speed Networking” managed by Charles.

Glen Morgan – Engineering & Production Manager | Sutton Tools (NZ) Ltd – The Phoenix

I started an apprenticeship with Sutton Tools (then Patience and Nicholson) back in 1980, as a Fitter and Turner. At this time, I also qualified as a marine engineer. In 1985, I joined the New Zealand Shipping Corporation as an engineering officer and spent the next seven years traveling the world on container ships and bulk carriers. I then came ashore and was a Chief Engineer at a local freezing works. After two and half years of this, I went back to Suttons as Engineering Manager.

In my time back at Suttons, I have worked in both engineering and production and am now Manufacturing Manager. During this time back at Sutton Tools, I also completed an MBA at Canterbury University. My main passion is LEAN (The Toyota Way) for all areas of a business.

“Following the fire, the New Zealand Engineering team has built from 10 to 26 staff. This increase through re-deployed production staff has significantly contributed to fast tracking the rebuild process.

In addition, 17 staff from Kaiapoi have relocated temporarily to Australia to help build up local production capacity at both the Thomastown and Maryborough sites. They have been enthusiastically welcomed by their Australian counterparts, providing welcome support in increasing the group’s drill production.”

Marjan Azimi - for design evaluation of a cardiac assist device known as ventricular assist device.

Marjan is a PhD candidate at Monash University with the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Her research is mainly about statistical shape modelling of the heart and numerical evaluation of blood flow dynamics. She is also the co-investigator of a Mime Seed grant where she is collaborating with other researchers at Monash to develop a cannula securement device for Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Research description:

The presentation will focus on heart failure patients who need a ventricular assist device (VAD). To provide a general framework for device evaluation a statistical shape model of the left ventricle is obtained. The developed framework is used to numerically assess the device-associated risk of thrombosis. The aim is to improve the knowledge around anatomical variability and device requirements potentially leading to improved designs and lower thrombosis risk.
