Vessel x Cinema Politica - 002
Event description
Vessel x Cinema Politica presents ‘Silvicola’ and are happy to announce a conversation with Daniel Jan Martin following the screening.
Change comes in many ways and forms across the globe – through art, activism, quiet persistence, and bold action. Our second movie in our new cinema series in collaboration with Cinema Politica is Silvicola - an intimate portrayal of the forest in British Columbia and the people in it.
Wednesday, 15th of October 6-10 pm.
About the Film
An unusually intimate glimpse into modern forestry practices in BC, Silvicola is a sensorially immense contemplation on the psychic entanglement of humans, machines, and nature. Silvicola, the Latin word for "living in the forest," or, "forest worshipper," Jean-Philippe Marquis' Silvicola is an artfully arranged series of snapshots composing a larger picture of Vancouver Island's legendary woods, but also of BC's unrelenting logging industry, and of the tenacious individuals caught in between, trying to reconcile the two. These subjects remain steadfast for a variety of reasons, from their cross-generational obligations, to their business ambitions, and a decent variety of others in between.
A story told through the eyes of an eclectic mix of characters whose lives and livelihoods are intimately entangled with the forest, Silvicola employs sinuating vignettes and industrial soundscapes to explore the tensions and dilemmas between commodification and conservation.
