Networking in Perth can feel pretty transactional. You turn up, swap business cards with people who want to sell you something, get added to a mailing list, and drive home wondering why you bothered.

This is not that.

What it is

A free evening for women who own, lead or manage a business in the Town of Victoria Park. About twenty of us in a room. Two local businesses host, share their space, and tell you the honest version of how they got started. Then there is time to actually talk to each other.

It is not a referral group and it is not a pitch night. Nobody is required to bring leads. There is no round-the-room introductions where everyone rehearses their thirty seconds instead of listening. Nobody is selling you anything.

What happens on the night

Your hosts are Jen Whyte from Chordial Tones Community Choir and Vanessa O'Connor from Maestria Productions.

Jen opens with a breathing exercise. Then she teaches the room to sing in rounds.

If that sentence made you tense up, stay with me. Rounds are the easiest way there is to sing with other people. No lyrics to learn, no solos, nobody standing up on their own. Everyone starts at a different point and the harmony builds by itself. You do not need to be able to sing. That is rather the point.

There is something about doing one slightly silly thing together at the start of an evening. Twenty women who arrived as strangers stop being strangers a good deal faster than they would over a cheese platter.

Then Jen and Vanessa each take a few minutes to tell you why they started what they started. Not what they sell. Why they began, what it took, and what they would say to someone sitting there wondering whether to do the same. Every event in this series does this, and it is the part people remember.

The practical bits

Thursday 8 October 2026. Doors from 5.45pm, we start at 6.00pm and finish by 8.00pm.

Maestria Productions, Unit 9/940 Albany Highway, East Victoria Park.

Free to attend. Food and drinks provided.

Childminding is available on site at no cost. Tell us when you book if you need it, including how many children and their ages, so we can staff it properly.

This is the first of six

Vic Park Women in Business runs to June 2027. Six gatherings, each hosted by different local businesses, at different times of day. Morning, lunchtime and evening, so you can come to the ones that fit around your life rather than the ones that suit us.

Come to one or come to all of them. The point of a series rather than a one-off is that you see the same faces again, and that is how you actually get to know people.

Who should come

Women who own or lead a business in the Town of Victoria Park. Women managing a business or a team. Creatives, makers, practitioners, sole traders, people two weeks into something new and people twenty years in.

Come on your own. Most people will be.
