My musical journey likely begun at age 3, when I remember being in my mothers arms onstage, and the pounding noise of her voice projecting from me being so close. I was crying but when she picked me up I understood I had to stop crying. I’d say this is the moment I started understanding show business.
I grew up with two musician parents, and when I was young, every year they put on a song-impersonator contest called Starry Eyed. It was a two-week event and my favorite time of the year. It also meant I was watching extraordinary singers sing modern and old classics. I still think many of these songs circulate inside me and influence my music in silent ways. I also think growing up around musical theatre has meant my music will always be inclusive of performance/theatrics, visuals, of dance, and of the stage.
I hail from Tāhuna / Queenstown. Nothing is as calming as the still central lakes. Last year I released and recorded my debut album, “Donegal” in Cromwell in my mother’s batch. Though I was living in Wellington/Auckland, I have always felt my music suits, and comes from the rolling Central Otago hills, and the stillness begging to be shaken.
When I do come home, I always play the piano in our home living room. There’s a general silence that makes our conversation easy. What I’ll be sharing with you at this Uncovered performance is some of that conversation.
My influences are all over but mainly: Nina Simone, Jeff Buckley, Blood Orange, This Mortal Coil, local music - especially my partner Kane, and my parents. Also 2000’s pop.
