Event description

Visible mending is a wonderful way to reduce your impact on the planet while exploring and expressing your own creativity. In these workshops with artist Michele Grimston, you’ll learn a range of techniques to darn, patch and reinforce old textiles to extend their life and add meaning and beauty to your everyday objects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own garments or household textiles to mend, and to take a relaxed and meditative approach to creating unique mends that reflect their personal style.

Learn to darn and embroider your woollens and other holey garments to give them a new lease on life after the dreaded moth attacks. We’ll explore a range of different darning and embroidery techniques perfect for covering and reinforcing small holes.

Facilitator Bio

Michele Grimston works predominantly with textile-based practices, including embroidery, tapestry and sewing. She is deeply influenced by the notion of textiles as a medium of care and connection. In working with communities to create, she draws on established traditions of communal making where the act of creating together opens up spaces for deep listening and community connection, building stories that shape culture through the process of creativity.

Michele has a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) and a Masters in Community Cultural Development. She has exhibited in solo and group shows in Canberra, Melbourne and Western Australia and undertaken residencies in Albany WA, Banff Canada, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve ACT and in multiple schools in the ACT and WA. She has presented relational community works for You Are Here Canberra, Rebus Theatre, Tree Street Art Safari and others.

In addition to her own creative practice, she has worked in cultural and community development roles for not-for-profit organisations, galleries and local government for over 10 years.
