Vocal Blokes Over the Hill and Still Singing
Event description
Wellington Vocal Blokes return to Greytown
– Older, Bolder, and Still Singing
Greytown, you asked for an encore — and we couldn’t resist.
Wellington’s Vocal Blokes are crossing the Remutakas once again for a full day of music, laughter, and good company on Saturday, 22 November.
Our concert last year was such a hit that we’ve decided to do it all again — only bigger and better. This time we’re adding two singing workshops led by our young and inspiring music director Paddy Shanahan, before rounding the day off with the 4:30 pm concert Over the Hill and Still Singing at the St Andrews Union Church Hall.
Workshop 1: Finding Your Voice (11:30 – 1:00 pm)
Think you “can’t sing”? Paddy Shanahan would disagree.
In this light-hearted session, he’ll show how singing is really just “talking on pitch.” Starting with Reviewing the Situation from Oliver!, you’ll discover how expression and rhythm turn everyday speech into music. No solos, no pressure — just an easy, encouraging space to let your voice come alive.
Workshop 2: Singing Together (2:00 – 3:30 pm)
Once you’ve warmed up, it’s time to build harmony.
Drawing inspiration from Jacob Collier’s version of Coldplay’s Fix You, Paddy will guide the group in shaping simple “oohs” into rich, layered sound. It’s less about perfection and more about listening, blending, and feeling the joy of shared music.
If you take part in this second workshop, you’ll also be invited to join the Vocal Blokes on stage for one song at the afternoon concert — a true “community choir” moment.
Workshops cost just $20 each or $35 for both, and if you enrol for both you get free entry to the concert.
The Concert – Over the Hill and Still Singing
At 4:30 pm, the St Andrews Hall doors open for a concert that promises to be every bit as joyful as last year’s — maybe even more. Over the Hill and Still Singing is a playful nod to our journey from Wellington to Greytown and to the fact that most of us are, well, not exactly in our twenties anymore.
But that’s the beauty of it — we sing for the sheer love of it. Expect songs about travel, friendship, and meeting new people, all delivered with our trademark mix of heart and humour.
We love performing for Greytown audiences because you listen, laugh, and sing along in all the right places. There’s something special about this town — the warmth, the curiosity, the way the hall fills with energy before the first note.
Come Join the Chorus
So whether you’re a shower-soloist, a closet crooner, or simply someone who enjoys good company and great music, come spend the day with us.
Bring your voice, bring a friend, and rediscover how good it feels to sing together.
Workshops at 11:30 am and 2:00 pm.
