Voice of the Hudson Valley's Indigenous Peoples
Nick Schumatoff, a former curator of Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, devoted his career to preserving the Lenape culture and dialect.
In the 1970s, Schumatoff and a team of researchers went to Oklahoma to record, preserve, and learn from the voices of the last remaining Unami-speaking Lenape population.
This is their story, with archival audio from the recordings themselves, presented by Jean Klurfeld.

About Jean Klurfeld
Jean grew up in Ossining, swimming in the Croton River and climbing on the Muscat Farm tractors. She studied history and museums in college, and started working as assistant curator at the Croton Point Park nature center soon after graduating. She likes taking naps after work, making dinner for people, birdwatching, and her job.
