Event description
OCEAN LOVERS TALKS - ANCIENT WISDOM, MODERN SCIENCE
Join speakers Dr Mitch Gibbs, Sarah Gorst and Kataya Barrett to hear about traditional and contemporary Indigenous ocean governance working with modern science to benefit the health of our ocean.
Sarah Gorst is co-founder of South Coast Seaweed.
Dr Mitchell Gibbs is a proud Dunghutti man through kinship, and Lecturer and Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of Sydney in the Schools of Geosciences. From Indigenous traditional owners and knowledge holders, he learns about our environments and ways to manage those environments using shellfish-associated practices handed down through oral and lived histories and putting this into practice with Habitat restoration work with the Gamay Rangers and the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council.
Kataya Barrett is a Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung woman from the North Coast of NSW. With salt water in her veins and a burning curiosity, she is on a journey to help care for and save our underwater world. She is a marine scientist that focuses on ways to centre Indigenous Science in coastal and marine planning. Currently, she is the Saltwater and Planning Project Officer with Country Needs People. She works with Aboriginal communities to plan and protect Sea Country.
