Veterans Public Arts Trail (VPAT)

Discover Melbourne’s cultural landscape through the creativity and lived experiences of those who served. The Veterans Public Arts Trail (VPAT) reveals how deeply Veteran stories are woven into the city’s built environment: from the Arts Precinct to its civic spaces, Melbourne is shaped, enriched and uplifted by artworks created by or connected to Australia’s Veteran Community.

Led by Mark Johnston, this guided 2.5-3 hour walk explores a curated selection of sculptures, memorials, murals, architecture and public artworks that reflect the service, resilience and imagination of Veteran Artists across generations. The route follows mostly flat, paved ground, beginning in Melbourne’s CBD and concluding at the ANVAM Gallery, where participants are invited to gather for further discussion.

Along the way, Mark will share insights into the artists and their practice, the symbolism behind each piece and the powerful role creativity plays in remembrance, recovery and identity. The VPAT offers a deeper appreciation of how public art can honour service, spark conversation and create connection, and how Melbourne’s artistic heart is built, quite literally, on the stories and creative contributions of Veterans.

Reflective, engaging and inspiring, this tour invites you to see Melbourne, and the Veteran Arts Community, through a new lens.

It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes and footwear for walking, bring a water bottle and camera, and dress for Melbourne weather.

The VPAT is open to the general public and is a free event.
