Dance Competition (*qualifying event)

Dates: Sunday 4 June 2023

Time: 2pm - 5pm

Location: Manning Community Hall, 1 Bradshaw Crescent, Manning WA 6152

Competition details: 

Special Olympics local competitions are for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism, who wish to compete against other athletes in their chosen sport, and qualify for Special Olympics' state and national competitions. They include:

- A high-quality competition, with multiple divisions for beginner, intermediate and advanced players

- Qualified umpires and game support officers

- Award presentation, with prizes and certificates

- Performance results and feedback

Competition rules: 

1. Dance styles: Participants may enter one dance per style and will perform each dance with a partner. Adjudicators will mark in accordance with Special Olympics guidelines and allocate marks out of 10 in the following categories: Musicality, Choreography, Athleticism and Presentation. Participants will receive a report form for each dance performed.

The dance styles include: 

Standard - Foxtrot, Quickstep, Slow Rhythm, Tango, Viennese waltz, Waltz

- Latin - Cha Cha Cha, Jive, Paso Doble, Rumba, Salsa, Samba

- New Vogue - Charmaine, Evening 3 Step, Gypsy Tap, Merrilyn, Parma Waltz, Tangoette

- Social - Alley Cat, Hand Jive, Heel Toe Polka, Macarena, Progressive Jive, Samba a-go-go

2. Music: Couples will be required to perform a minimum or 1 min 10 sec to a maximum of 1 min 30 sec to music of their choice. Music must be supplied to Darryl Davenport in MP3 format

3. Costumes: encouraged but not compulsory.

Who can get involved? 

- Athletes who are registered as 2023 Special Olympics members 

- Athletes who are members of DanceSport WA and/or train at a Special Olympics Affiliate Club

- Athletes who want to become eligible to compete in upcoming Special Olympics state and national competitions, including our upcoming 2023 State Games

How to register: 

To compete in the competition, athletes must register online via this page Friday 12 May. 

Before the day, all registered athletes will receive an information pack with further information on the event.
