Waiheke's World of Food Visits South Africa

Event description

Hi, we’re Heidi and Sonia - originally from South Africa. We’ve been in NZ for 17 years and 10 years on Waiheke Island.

Heidi grew up in Durban, which is on the east coast. It’s very tropical there - think mango and avo trees in the garden, surfing and a great mix of cultures (as is the rest of the rainbow nation). The Zulu tribe is native to that area and there is also a huge population of people from India.

Sonia is from all over but grew up mainly in Johannesburg, think big busy city and far from the ocean, as well as Bloemfontein. Which is basically in the middle of the country in the farming area, it’s flat and you can see for miles, red dust storms and farmers with utes.

We both lived in Cape Town for some time before moving to NZ. Cape Town is truly metropolitan with lots of Malay and other influences, French, Dutch, English. The Western province (where Cape Town is situated) is home to the Xhosa people (this one needs a tongue click).

Our food and cooking displays the coming together of various flavors and styles of the multiple cultures which make up the heartbeat of South Africa.

Main: Durban Curry with Cape Malay Yellow Rice

Curry with Potatoes and peas, served on a yellow rice, with a side of sambals, pickles and a traditional chutney. This dish hails from the city of Durban, in the province of Kwazulu Natal, which has a big Indian population and is thought by some to be the home of the best curries in the world!

Dessert: Vegan Malva pudding

Many say that Nelson Mandela adored this moist, sticky pudding drenched in sauce, a favourite South African dessert.

Come at 4pm for the cooking workshop (bookings essential) or 6pm to enjoy the dinner.

If joining the workshop please wear closed toed shoes to comply with WRT's health and safety regulations.

We look forward to meeting everyone and sharing a piece of our heritage with you!
