Walk in the Warm Zone - An historical literary walking tour

Tracing the stories of award-winning writer Jessica Anderson, in Yeronga, Brisbane.

ASHG invites you to a fascinating walk that brings together history and literature. Literary Award winner, Jessica Anderson lived at 56 Villa Street, Yeronga as a child and early teenager in the 1920s and early 1930s. Her novel Tirra Lirra by the River, her book of short stories, Stories from the Warm Zone and Sydney Stories and Starting too Late, (Memoir published in Meanjin in 2003) draw on her memories of her Brisbane childhood. She referred to Stories from the Warm Zone and Sydney Stories as autobiographical fiction.

The walk led by Pauline Peel with Jeanette Wiley and Wendie Hirsch is a glimpse at some of the history of the area and Yeronga Memorial Park. The words from Jessica Anderson's novel and short stories, bring richness and texture to the history. Jeanette and Wendie will share some of their personal memories of growing up in the area.  (Image: courtesy Laura Jones)

Starting point: 9.45 for a 10.00am start at 48 Villa Street on the footpath under the trees. From there we will move through the historic Yeronga Memorial Park past Yeronga State School then across the road to Christ Church in Cork Street.  

Finish point: The History Room at Yeronga Community Centre, Cnr Villa St and Park Rd for a cup of tea at about 11.30 am. 

Walk length: It is an easy walk (no hills) of about 1.5 ks.

Please bring a hat, water and sunblock.
