Event description

We are very excited to present our walk/kayak combo for 2025! Join us as we explore the Mahurangi Regional Park (West) and paddle the Pūhoi River to our final desination at Pūhoi township. PLEASE DON’T BOOK THIS TRAIL IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH, OR HAVE NO EXPERIENCE OF PADDLING A KAYAK. YOUR SAFETY IS OUR PARAMOUNT CONCERN.

This year, in order to work with the tides, our amazing trail starts with the walk. We will arrive by bus at Opahi Bay and gather up before beginning the stroll around the low-tide flats. We’ll pass by Mita Bay before climbing the ridge for outstanding views over Mahurangi Harbour and the islands of the outer Hauraki Gulf. Then we descend to Sullivan’s Bay and take a bit of time for the beautiful surrounds and history.

Heading south, we’ll climb the hill on our way to Te Muri Beach, taking time for a quick visit to Cudlip Point. This part of the walk has more outstanding views and beautiful coastal flora, including old puriri. The trail then descends to the beach where we’ll cross Te Muri stream. Once safely on the other side, there’s ample time for a refreshment break and a swim. We’ll also explore the urupā which has a rich and varied history.

From there, it’s a peaceful meander along the beach, up and over the saddle, and down to the historic homestead on the northern side of the Pūhoi River. On arrival, we’ll meet with Pūhoi River Kayaks and prepare for the paddle upriver. After gearing up and a safety briefing, we catch the incoming tide for a relaxed and enjoyable paddle to Pūhoi. We’ll take our packs with us in the kayaks so pack light and waterproof.

Finally, we can take a quick stroll along the road to the pub for restorative beverage and the bus ride back to base.

We'll take our time and enjoy the views, and stop for snacks, lunch and stories along the way – there's no rush. Much of the day is spent on good tracks, but there are some stretches of uneven ground across paddocks, and there are couple of steep hills to negotiate.

This combination of walk and paddle will be very exciting and beautiful, and features an amazing array of rivers, beaches, headlands, bush and stunning vistas. We can’t wait to show you around.
