Andrew Crouch, bird watcher and volunteer with Friends of Sturt River Landcare Group, will lead an early morning walk around Oaklands Wetland to meet the birds who now call this constructed wetland home. Andrew is an engaging and interesting speaker and an avid observer of birds. He will lead this walk along accessible paths and around areas that have been planted or regenerated by volunteers from the landcare group.

Join him to observe birds on the water, in their nests or tree hollows, or in the air. Learn how to find birds by listening for their calls or understanding more about how they behave. Learn how birds hunt and feed, where they gather materials for nesting, how they raise their young and protect them from predators. Importantly, Andrew will discuss what we can do to protect birds, including watching them safely.

Much of the area Andrew covers in this walk was planted by Friends of Sturt River Landcare Group volunteers over the past decade. More than 100,000 biodiversity plantings have been added to this site to increase habitat for birds and other native wildlife at Oaklands wetland and neighbouring Oaklands Reserve.

Participants are invited to bring binoculars or camera equipment for this session and are welcome to join Friends of Sturt River Landcare Group volunteers at one of our regular working bees that follows this event. (Tools, equipment and refreshments are provided for any bird watcher who joins us to volunteer at the working bee.)
