Do you live within the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) area (City of Bayswater, City of Swan, Shire of Mundaring and Town of Bassendean)? Would you like to learn more about how you can make a difference to the environment by sorting your waste correctly?

Join Recycle Right at Resource Recovery Group's Canning Vale Centre, where you can see how designated waste streams are received, sorted and processed. Residents within the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) are invited to attend, including the City of Bayswater, City of Swan, Shire of Mundaring and Town of Bassendean.

On the tour you will get to see:

🍎 Resource Recovery Group's FOGO Processing Facility, where FOGO (food organics, garden organics) material is pre-processed to remove contamination.

🌱 The Green Waste Facility, where garden waste is received.

♻️ The Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where recyclables are separated, baled and sold for reuse.

👩‍🏫 The Education Centre, where there are more resources and ideas to help you to avoid and reduce waste, reuse, repurpose and recycle.

Tour path, footwear requirements and environmental conditions:

The tour involves spending approximately 30 minutes of walking outdoors 🌞 on bush paths around the site. A reasonable level of physical fitness is required. Some sections of the tour path may have soft edges, are inclined and have kerbs. Attendees must follow the tour guide’s instruction, stick to the path and cross roads using the marked crossings.

What to wear: Fully enclosed footwear is essential for all attendees. Shoes must cover the toe, heel, top and side of the foot. We strongly recommend you wear long pants, a hat, sunscreen and bring a water bottle. All tour participants will be required to wear a high-visibility vest (provided by Canning Vale Centre staff).

Stairs: The tour path includes two separate staircases of approximately 40 STAIRS each. Attendees are asked to use the handrails while ascending and descending the stairs. Platforms are located approximately every ten stairs. (Alternative options may be available – please contact the Waste Education team to discuss any concerns).

Plants, animal activity and allergies:

Snakes - Please note, in spring and summer, snakes begin to emerge to bask in the sun and there may be an increase in sightings around the facility. If you see a snake while on the tour, please notify the tour guide immediately. In the unlikely event of a situation, your tour guide is trained in first aid should an emergency arise.

Birds – Swooping birds may be active in the area year-round. Magpies usually breed between August and October and swooping behaviours are most common during this time. Participants should keep together with their tour group and are encouraged to wear a hat and sunglasses where possible.

Bees, insects and plants – Bees and other insects may be active on site, as well as flowering plants year-round.

Visitors that have any allergies such as bee stings or are anaphylactic must bring and carry an Epipen with them.

Minimum age requirement and adult supervision:

The minimum age requirement for children is 6 years of age - They must be registered for their own ticket and be accompanied by a supervising adult. Children under the age of 6 years old are not permitted.

What to bring:

• A mobile phone or camera (if you wish to take photos on tour) and a digital copy of your ticket/s (no need to print a hardcopy of your ticket).

• A full reusable water bottle

*We advise participants DO NOT bring heavy bags, as participants will need to carry any items they bring with them for the duration of the tour.

Health and hygiene:

All visitors are required to follow good hygiene practices. As this is a waste processing facility, visitors should wash their hands and/or use the hand sanitiser available on site, before/after going to the toilet or handling food or drink. Attendees should not touch any trees, plants, or any items you see on the ground. If you have any flu-like symptoms or are unwell, we ask that you do not attend the tour.

No smoking: Smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes and vapes, is not permitted at the Canning Vale Centre.

This event is for residents of the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (Town of Bassendean, City of Bayswater, Shire of Mundaring and City of Swan). Booking are essential for all attendees.

Visitor car parking is available on site for those driving. Please follow signs for Administration/Tour Parking on arrival.

If taking public transport, please note:

the nearest train station is Murdoch Transit Station
the nearest bus stops are along Ranford Road (before Bannister Road for bus routes 204, 205, 206, 207, 517, 518, 519; and after Bannister Road for bus routes 204, 205, 206, 207, 517, 518, 519, 656) - it is an 11-minute walk from these bus stops to the facility. Please be aware there is no pedestrian footpath from Ranford Road to the facility.
