Mountains to Sea Wellington and Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira warmly invite you to the Wānanga Waimāori 2023!

This is a full-day event of talks, workshops, and field trips for any community group, individual, or organisation who shares a commitment to creating a positive impact for Wellington’s waterways. This is a day for enabling kōrero, sharing knowledge, and weaving connections between the wider freshwater focused communities of Te Upoko o Te Ika Māui. You’ll have the opportunity to share your own experiences, and learn from others to develop new strategies and initiatives for freshwater restoration.

The morning will be held indoors at Takapūwāhia Marae in Porirua. Following a pōwhiri you’ll hear from a range of speakers, including experts, mana whenua representatives, and community leaders. We have an exciting collection of topics to share with you in the lead up to the day! There will also be plenty of opportunity to mix around, share your own stories, and gain insights from others.

After lunch, we’ll head out in nature, with field based interactive workshops and tours. Transport to and from these events is included. These include:

Display of monitoring techniques for assessing fish passage remediation success with Greater Wellington

Join the Greater Wellington freshwater fish passage remediation team to get a taster on how fish migration barriers are assessed, different methods for remediation, and see a demonstration on monitoring fish through electro-fishing.

A cultural history bus trip with Ngāti Toa Rangatira

Join kaumātua to immerse yourself in Ngāti Toa Rangatira culture, through their stories, their history and see and experience the culture first hand on a bus tour of significant sites around Porirua.

Freshwater monitoring for restoration with Mountains to Sea Wellington

"You don't know what you don't measure!" - Get hands-on with freshwater science in this introduction to monitoring habitats, biodiversity, and water quality. Great for people wanting to understand the ecological health of their local waterways, learn about human impacts, and build a monitoring plan to understand the effectiveness of their restoration actions.

Riparian restoration and connections to young people with Porirua City Council

Muck in with the Porirua City Council on a local stream side planting site and learn valuable methods for riparian restoration and building connections to young people and the wider community for your projects.

This event is organized in partnership with Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira, Porirua City Council, and Greater Wellington, and is a part of Restoration Week 2023. Morning tea and lunch will be provided for everyone. This wānanga is free to attend, but a koha is appreciated.

This event is for community groups, individuals, organizations, and those who share a passion for making a difference for our waterways. While we would love to host you all, due to the limited space available we do ask that a limit of three people per organization attend. Thank you for your understanding.

There will be display space available should you wish to provide resources for others to take away or if you would like to put up posters communicating the actions your group are involved in.

We encourage the use of masks in our indoor spaces. Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the event. If you are feeling unwell we request that you please do not attend.
