Event description

In remembrance of the victims of human rights violations and extrajudicial killings during the War on Drugs in the Philippines, please join us for a free/koha screening of "On the President's Orders" documentary in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

NOTE: For a list of trigger warnings, please see this document. Since we will be viewing and discussing potentially sensitive topics, the event will have an Open Door Policy, which means that you may leave the venue any time, for any reason, and will not be judged for doing so.

WHAT IS THE WAR ON DRUGS?

Spearheaded by the former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, the War on Drugs is a violent anti-drug campaign which killed nearly 30,000 Filipinos, most of which were urban poor (Karapatan, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch).

WHAT ARE EXTRAJUDICIAL KILLINGS?

"Extrajudicial killings, or extrajudicial executions, happen when someone in an official position deliberately kills a person without any legal process" (World Organisation Against Torture).

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO TALK ABOUT TODAY?

Human rights violations and extrajudicial killings are still on-going in the Philippines under President Bongbong Marcos, the son of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. who proclaimed Martial Law in 1972, and Vice President Sara Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte (Karapatan).

WHY WOULD I WANT TO JOIN THE FILM SCREENING?

The film screening is for anyone who is keen to learn about the War on Drugs, wants to share their experience during the War on Drugs (or something similar) through group discussion, wants to meet new people, wants to watch a Philippine film/documentary, or just wants to have snacks.

I WANT TO JOIN BUT I'M FROM TĀMAKI MAKAURAU / CHRISTCHURCH / THE PHILIPPINES.

We will stream the film through Zoom for viewers outside Te Whanganui-a-Tara, however, there may be internet and other technical difficulties during the event itself. Also please make sure to select the "Online" ticket option when RSVPing.

HOW MUCH IS THE TICKET?

The film screening is free but we appreciate koha for the venue/snacks/donations to Philippine non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

NOTE: This event is organised by ordinary Filipino tauiwi/migrant/diaspora community members affiliated with Anakbayan Aotearoa, Aotearoa Philippines Solidarity, Gabriela Aotearoa, and Migrante Aotearoa. This is also an LGBTQ+ friendly event.
