War on Drugs Film Screening
Event description
Please join us for a free/koha film screening (online and in-person) about the "War on Drugs" in the Philippines, in remembrance/solidarity of the victims of human rights violations and extrajudicial killings. You can find more info below (including how to support if you can't attend).
NOTE: For a list of trigger warnings, please see this document. Since we will be viewing and discussing potentially sensitive topics, the event will have an Open Door Policy, which means that you may leave the venue/online link at any time, for any reason, and will not be judged for doing so.
WHAT IS THE WAR ON DRUGS?
Spearheaded by the former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, the War on Drugs is a violent anti-drug campaign which killed nearly 30,000 Filipinos, most of which were urban poor (Karapatan, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch).
WHAT ARE EXTRAJUDICIAL KILLINGS?
"Extrajudicial killings, or extrajudicial executions, happen when someone in an official position deliberately kills a person without any legal process" (World Organisation Against Torture).
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO TALK ABOUT TODAY?
Human rights violations and extrajudicial killings are still on-going in the Philippines under President Bongbong Marcos, the son of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. who proclaimed Martial Law in 1972, and Vice President Sara Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte (Karapatan).
WHY WOULD I WANT TO JOIN THE FILM SCREENING?
The film screening is for anyone who is keen to learn about the War on Drugs, wants to share their experience during the War on Drugs (or something similar) through group discussion, wants to meet new people, wants to watch a Philippine film/documentary, or just wants to have snacks.
We will also kōrero/talk about how this still affects Filipino communities in the PH and abroad, and how this connects to multiple issues (including Aotearoa and worldwide).
This event welcomes Filipinos/non-Filipinos from all walks of life who are willing to learn, listen, or contribute (LGBTQ+ friendly).
