Join us to celebrate NAIDOC week by learning the ancient craft of string making with Aboriginal Elder Aunty Jo Selfe. During this session you will hear cultural stories and connect to country by using natural materials and understand where they can be sourced while learning the skill to make a net and dilly bags. Participants will contribute to a communal demonstration piece that will line the wall of the Inner West Green Living Centre education space to teach others important First Nations culture.The workshop is opened to all abilities, however if you have learnt to make string previously this allows you to learn the next steps of putting it to use.

Aunty Joanne Selfe a Gadigal woman born in Sydney and a founding member of Warringa Baiya (the NSW Aboriginal Women’s Legal Service) who sat on the Youth Koori Court as an Elder for a number of years. As a cultural practitioner, holder of sky lore, and master grass weaver, Aunty Jo shares the teachings she learnt from her mother, Elders and community knowledge holders, using the cultural practice of weaving to share understandings of sophisticated Aboriginal knowledge, intricate systems, complex tapestries that interweave with cultural and social practice.

This workshop is presented by Inner West Councils Green Living Centre. Entry is free for residents of the Inner West Council area and priority will be given to Inner West residents.
