Event description

Eileen and Graeme Piggot will lead this walk through some modern, botanical, and historical highlights in and around Warkworth.

We will begin by heading from Warkworth Walks Baxter St HQ to the river and walk at an easy, warm-up, pace west to a native tree bushwalk through Kowhai Park with its newly upgraded trail and boardwalk.  We will then reverse direction to walk through the riverside path and an uphill edge-of-town meander to Parry Kauri Park.

Parry Kauri Park is a gem in Warkworth, right beside the museum. It is an outstanding example of NZ native bush that has been extremely well-protected and board-walked. We’ll share some botanical highlights, especially with its centuries old kauri trees. We’ll stop for lunch at the park, making sure there is a little time for anyone to explore the museum if they wish.

After lunch, we will walk down Wilson Rd to the historic Cement Works. The latter are not only notable as a previous essential and thriving industry in Warkworth, but also a favourite for anyone wanting to photograph their towering remains.

We will then take a peaceful walk through fields and a river path to Lucy Moore Park before returning to HQ.

There is some walking on public roads that requires caution and attention to your guide. Bring your own water and snacks to keep you going until lunchtime, and bring some cash for entry to the museum if you wish (it also has a great gift shop). A moderate level of fitness and good walking shoes are required for this walk.

Our expected finish time is 2.30-3pm.
