FAQs - How accessible is this event?

Accepted Answer

Karanga Camp has ramps to access some buildings, though most have a single step to enter. There is a lot of gravel pathways and uneven ground which may not be suitable for everyone. LARP is a social activity and can be physically demanding. We encourage you to take regular breaks and rest if you need to, letting someone know where to find you.

What to expect at a LARP - Role playing

Similar to a table-top role playing game such as Dungeons &amp; Dragons or Call of Cthulu, role playing in LARP requires you to speak and behave as your character would in a situation.The main difference with LARP is you aren't restricted by the table itself. You will need to move around areas, interact with items, solves puzzles and riddles, and actually hit what you're fighting.As a Player you'll role play your character for the duration of the LARP, and signal when you are out of character. Meal times are generally out of character, though others around you may still be in character so be courteous to them.As Crew you'll role play various characters and monsters throughout the LARP. You'll have the opportunity to let us know what you do and don't like to play and do leading up to, and at the LARP.Caution, Bleed!Bleed is what we call it when your in character experience starts to bleed into your real life emotional state. Role playing can be intense and it's important to remember an in character grudge doesn't reflect out of character feelings. Check in regularly with others and talk to the GMs and Welfare Officers who are there to support.

What to expect at a LARP - Combat

LARP combat is like playing tag with a sword. You're role playing a battle simulation, not trying to actually disable your opponent.Head and groin shots are illegal. If you hit there by accident, take a step back and check in with the person before resuming. Wide swings and dramatic flourishes look cool, feel great, and are generally safer for everyone involved.Bruising is expected but not encouraged. You might bruise, but you shouldn't be hitting hard enough that you're consistently bruising yourself and others.Grappling and brawling is out by default. Talk with your opponent about consent to brawl in your fights and let a GM know to expect it.A GM or other experienced combatant will be acting as a Field Marshal, directing the combat to minimise the impact of risks and hazards such as terrain and crowding.We use LARP safe boffer style equipment. This is generally a fibre-glass rod wrapped in foam and coated in latex in the shape of a sword or an axe (or frying pan). Ultimate Warlock also uses single-shot Nerf guns (or similar), and spell packets (fabric bags filled with bird seed).All personal LARP weapons brought to the game will be inspected by the GMs and/or delegated person to insure they're fit for use. What to expect at a LARP - Props and costume

Ultimate Warlock doesn't have a particular aesthetic that you need to achieve. We've had cowboys, lawyers, fey creatures, and knights in game. Having props on hand is great for role playing and fleshing out a character.When building your wardrobe and prop collection consider:Time of year and weather forecastHow easy is it to use a restroom?Can I wear these shoes all day?Do I really want to carry this prop around all day?Am I going to worry too much about breaking this?A great place to start is your own wardrobe and your local op-shop. 11/10 LARPers recommend layering scarves.

What to expect at a LARP - Language, hand signs, and terminology

LARPs use various calls, hand signs, and colour coded items to represent different effects both in and out of character. They are designed to keep you safe and having fun with minimal impact to your immersion.The full list will be covered in the rules document (see game resources) and in the pre-game briefing.

What to expect at a LARP - Health, safety, and wellbeing

If you are sick please do not come to the game. You will be refunded if you are unable to attend due to illness or injury.First Aiders and Welfare Officers are sourced from the attendees who volunteer to fill the role. They will assist with any personal out of character injuries and welfare concerns that you have at any point. Stay hydrated, eat when you're hungry, rest when you're tired. Refer to the NZLARPS Code of Conduct below.
