Willebrant w/ Hamish Upton + Zela Papageorgiou
Willebrant returns to Fyansford in duo mode with contemporary percussionist, classical music collaborator and improvisor, Hamish Upton for a special afternoon of electro-acoustic ambient and improvised music with support from percussionist/sound artist and improviser, Zela Papageorgiou
Willebrant is the ambient field drone project of Naarm/Melbourne bassist and producer Karl Willebrant. Willebrant creates immersive textures and emotive expanses that allow the listener to conceive a visual experience through the mind's eye, traversing soundscapes and drones utilizing bass guitars, found instruments, synths, and field recordings. In 2020, Willebrant entered the home studio and delved into his love of ambient, emerging with a myriad of releases to critical acclaim, featuring collaborations with artists from Europe, The United States and Australia. 2024 has seen a myriad of performances for Willebrant with shows across the east coast supporting IKSRE on her 'abundance' album tour, as bassist with James Hullick & the BOLT ensemble for the show ECSTATIC at the Sydney Opera House and his own solo shows at MONA, Hobart and Open Studio, Northcote.
Hamish Upton is a percussionist who thrives as a contemporary classical music collaborator, improvisor, and educator. He performs regularly with James Hullick & the BOLT ensemble, most recently touring to perform the show ECSTATIC at the Sydney Opera House in August. In July, he was invited to teach at the University of Canterbury for 2 weeks, and presented a solo recital during this residency including his own composition Rotoiti, Boxing Day 2023 for steel pan drum, vibraphone and field recordings, as well as an amplified woodblock solo by Australian composer Liza Lim. Hamish co-directs the exploratory ensemble Ossicle Duo with trombonist Benjamin Anderson, and the pair have commissioned 6 new works for this unique instrumental combination. Ossicle recorded a fully improvised album with 7 collaborators, due for release on October 6th.
Zela Papageorgiou is a Naarm based percussionist, creating and performing in the fields of contemporary-classical music, Sound Art and improvisation. As a chamber musician and creative collaborator, she has appeared with organisations and ensembles including Play On and Ad Lib Collective, and has performed in local festivals such as Melbourne Music Week, Melbourne Festival, Brunswick Music Festival, Midsumma Festival and Art After Dark. Zela is a 2024-2025 Artistic Associate with Melbourne’s leading Art Music ensemble Speak Percussion and is the core percussionist for Forest Collective. She has participated in artist residencies with organisations including The Australian Tapestry Workshop (VIC), Bundanon (NSW) and most recently at Shiro Oni Studios (Japan, 2024).
