Watch the Stars
Description
Watch the Stars is a science fiction megagame for 20-60 players. In this game you play a role as a leader in a faction within the galactic civilisation that is under attack by mysterious raiders. You could be a politician, scientist, diplomat, or military leader (you might even get to play the raiders). Over the six hours of the game you may experience tense diplomatic negotiations, scientific breakthroughs, wars, and the revelation of ancient secrets. Every faction has different goals, strengths and weaknesses. Its up to you to choose your path in the game. You could cooperate with the other factions or compete against them. You can promote order and harmony, or chaos and strife. Megagames fuse game mechanics from board games, LARP, and tabletop roleplaying games together into a unique six hour gaming experience. With over a dozen player factions and agendas in play almost anything could happen. No two megagames are alike, and the end of the game is unscripted. A dedicated team of volunteers will be there to help run the game.
FAQs
- How do I get my role in the game?
All players will be contacted via email two weeks before the game (the weekend of 7 March) for your preferred faction and role in the game. We will do our best to try and assign as many players to their preferred roles. You will then get your game role information on Monday 9 March. If you buy a ticket after 7 March, you will be sent a casting form ASAP.
- Has this game been run before?
Watch the Stars was run in Hamilton in August 2025, and in Wellington in November 2025. You can find an over view of these games at:

- Where can I find out more about this game?
You can find an overview of the game and the rules used in the last run at: https://housewar.org/future-megagames/
These rules will be updated before the game in Auckland.
- Do patrons get any special perks?
Patron tickets let us afford more expensive components for the game and extra printing. Patrons do not get any perks in the game, but when we are casting players, patrons get some preference on specific role assignments.
- Do I need to recruit a team?
No. Most solo players will be assigned to teams (there may be a couple of roles just for solo players). There are discounts for buying packages of team tickets, so there is a small incentive to bring a few friends with you.
- Do I need to wear a costume?
No. Some players find a costume can help with roleplaying immersion, and to help other players identify them quickly. This can be as simple as wearing a hat, mask, lab coat for scientists, formal dress for a leader or diplomat, or having everyone on a team wear the same colour t-shirt.
