Water for Girls: Leading in Disasters
Description
THE AQUAPURA PROJECT:
AquaPura Project is a Girl-Led Aotearoa New Zealand initiative to provide safe water to disadvantaged families and communities around the world.
To commemorate International Day of the Girl (11th Oct), we launch a fundraising campaign to fund a SafeWater Project during the month of October.
October also commemorates International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (13th Oct).
This year's theme is: "Resilience Starts at Home".
GLOBAL DISASTER SNAPSHOT:
Did You Know?
Every year, around 6,800 natural disasters happen worldwide.
Natural disasters are devastating, powerful forces of nature.
HUMANITARIAN CRISIS + NATURAL DISASTERS: THE CRITICAL IMPACTS ON GIRLS
A Tier 1 critical need for women & girls in natural disasters and humanitarian crisis is access to Safe Water.
Pre-existing, structural gender inequalities mean that humanitarian crisis and disasters affect women and girls more acutely. The vulnerability of females increases when they are in a lower socioeconomic group.
Lack of access to Safe Water robs girls of their potential, compromises their well-being, and perpetuates cycles of poverty.
Water is LIFE. It is a basic human right that over 2.1 billion people have no safe access to globally. That means 1 in 4 people in our world cannot tap in to the source of life.
We want to change that - and we need your help.
OUR VISION: "Fund Lifelong Resilience"
To break the cycle of poverty by educating girls & women in technical water installations and develop them into water utility managers.
We believe that this approach directly combats inequality while creating economic opportunity, as well as flexible and dignified employment for women and girls in essential water services.
OUR BENEFICIARY:
SWFEC-Philippines is an independent non-profit NGO committed to making Safe Water available to all communities during humanitarian and disaster aid response, and sustain whole community resilience.
Many of their long-term SafeWater installations are lead and managed by women and girls in local barangays and communities.

DID YOU KNOW?
A study from UNICEF found that over 500 million girls worldwide do not have access to adequate menstrual hygiene facilities. This forces many girls to either miss school during their menstrual cycle or, worse, drop out entirely.
When we think of education, we often overlook the importance of a clean, private space where a girl can manage her menstrual health with dignity and continue her studies without embarrassment or fear.
Funding the technical education of girls and women as water installers and water managers is critical to their resilience and empowerment.
WHY?
...because a WorldBank report stated that around the world, girls and women are largely responsible for fetching and using water for household purposes - but less than 5% have been formally trained and employed as water engineers and water utility managers.
When you educate girls and women to provide essential safe water services, you are providing secure and lifelong employment.
