Weaving the Story
Event description
Join us at the Pavilion, Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, for a relaxed day of weaving with two skilled weavers. You're free to wander in and out, but we encourage you to stay and immerse yourself in the craft, completing a project you'll be proud of.
We'll break for lunch from 12-1pm, allowing you to switch between workshops if desired. Both teachers will guide you through weaving with raffia, ideal for beginners. Jodie Munday will also bring materials like paper twine, jute, and cotton for experimentation.
Meet Aunty Deidre Martin, a beloved local with exceptional weaving skills and a wealth of stories to share. Jodie Munday, a practicing artist from Bungonia, specializes in drawing, painting, weaving, and textile art, with a focus on native plants, animals, and rural life. Her work reflects her Aboriginal, Celtic, and British heritage.
Materials for weaving will be prepared and naturally dyed using bush materials on Friday afternoon, led by gifted natural dyes and textile artist, Joanna Fowles from 1-4pm. You are all welcome to come down to the pavilion and participate in this process prior to the workshop.
On the day you will share the space with Uncle Steve Russell teaching another group Traditional Fishing Nets
We look forward to weaving with you!
