Event description

Join us for a special weaving workshop with Uncle Steve in Currarong. Deeply connected to this region through the Timbery family, Uncle Steve will share the rich traditions of weaving, from harvesting and preparing materials to creating beautiful woven pieces. As we sit together, weaving the morning away, you'll have the chance to learn about cultural practices that have been passed down through generations.

Uncle Steven Russell, a proud Bidjigal artist, was born at La Perouse Mission on the shores of Botany Bay, Sydney. Coming from the renowned Timbery family, his mother, Esme Timbery, is an award-winning shellworker, and his great-great-grandmother, “Queen” Emma Timbery, had her shellworks displayed in London in 1910. The family legacy extends further, with his cousin, Laddie Timbery, making boomerangs and shields, and his uncle, Joe Timbery, being a champion boomerang thrower who performed for Queen Elizabeth during her 1954 Royal Tour. Uncle Steven himself is a celebrated drawer, painter, and weaver, with his works displayed in multiple galleries.

This 4 hour workshop in which you will make an aboriginal artefact from hand-dyed jute. The morning includes a half hour lunch break..so bring something to eat or head off to the local cafe.
