WEAVING THE SEASON is a soulful basket weaving series of monthly gatherings across the springtime months exploring slow craft, natural fibres, earth connection and nourishing community.

About this Workshop

As the sap begins to rise, spring invites the energy of emergence. A time to notice what is unfurling, what is reaching toward the light, and what is ready to be brought into being.

Weaving the Season is a soulful spring basketry series with three monthly gatherings where we come together to create with natural fibres, deepen our relationship with the living world, and experience the grounding and joyful rhythms of weaving and creating by hand. We will also have a WhatsApp group so we can share our weaving progress along the way.

Across the season we will explore two woven creations: a random weave market basket and a woven sunhat. Working with the energy of spring we will move between structure, form and practicality to whimsy, beauty and creativity, all the while preparing us with useful items for the warmer months.

Through working with a range of natural materials, we will explore the unique qualities of different fibres, develop our weaving skills, and deepen our relationships with the plants that surround us.

As we gather and create together, we will also explore respectful fibre harvesting and preparation, developing a more intimate relationship with the materials we work with and the living landscapes from which they come.

More than a workshop series, this is a space for creativity, connection, and community; a place to gather, share ideas, learn from one another, and be nourished by the process of making together.

Whether you are completely new to basket weaving, an experienced maker, or returning to the craft after time away, you are warmly welcome.

About the Gatherings
These gatherings are intentionally intimate, allowing space for connection, guidance, and restful creative processes. Expect warm lighting, natural textures, cups of tea, gentle conversation, and moments of stillness woven throughout our time together.

Alongside the weaving itself, a gentle sense of community will be woven through the season. There will be space to ask questions, exchange ideas, share discoveries and learn from one another’s experiences. Often in creative spaces, we are nourished not only by the making itself, but by witnessing the ways others see, gather, create, and relate to the world around them. Over time, the group becomes part of the process; a place of inspiration, and shared learning.

Across the season we will explore two weaving processes. We will begin with a random weave market basket, which will become our anchoring practice throughout the gatherings. We will begin by forming the basket's framework and will use a range of materials to create the form, meeting new fibres to weave into this basket in each session.

During the final two sessions we will move into creating a woven open top sunhat that will be beautiful, practical and shaped to fit you just right.

Respectful fibre harvesting and preparation will be explored throughout the season, inviting a deeper understanding of where our materials come from and encouraging a more reciprocal relationship with the land. As we gather, weave, and learn together, the process becomes more than simply making baskets - it becomes a practice of attention, connection, and being nourished in community.

Who this workshop is suitable for 
You don’t need any experience in weaving or any particular creative process to attend this workshop, just a curiosity and a feeling that this practice speaks to you. On the other hand, I anticipate that creators, makers, artists and weavers will find that this journey offers nourishment; be it the techniques, harvesting and preparation processes or the simple act of creating and connecting within the circle. Cultural sensitivity 
We must acknowledge that there is complexity in working with weaving on stolen land; a practice that is so culturally rich and intertwined with the sacred. I acknowledge the traditional practices of Indigenous weavers who have woven these lands since time immemorial and have developed and refined basket weaving practices over this time. I am not an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person and Indigenous weaving, stories and lore is not the content of this workshop. I stand as an ally to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, striving to avoid cultural appropriation in my offerings as a workshop facilitator and in my life more broadly. I am happy to refer you to Indigenous weavers who you can learn from and remunerate fairly for their work if this is what you seek.

Facilitator bio 
Shelley Krycer is a visual artist based on Wurundjeri country who came to basket weaving over 15 years ago. When she did, Shelley found that her hands had a sense of ‘returning’ to something that they had long known. They wove and wove, and continue to weave, with a sense of remembering and learning with each stitch.

Working primarily with foraged and home grown plant materials has brought an additional layer to her practice; an ongoing, living relationship with the natural world. Through her weaving practice Shelley listens to, observes, and participates in the rhythms of the ecosystems around her, deepening her sensitivity to place and working cyclically with the seasons.

Shelley’s process-based art practice brings together basket weaving, painting and other nature-based creative processes. It is informed by her Fine Arts (Honours) degree (Monash University 2004), studies in Art Education (Grad Dip Ed, University of Melbourne 2006), Permaculture (Advanced PDC with Peter Allen 2012), and Steiner Education (Advanced Diploma, Melbourne Rudolf Steiner Seminar 2016-17).

Shelley has been teaching art and facilitating workshops since 2004 and sharing basket weaving workshops since 2014. She has been invited to bring this work to festivals such as Seven Sisters and The Village Continuum, as part of programs hosted by Nature’s Apprentice as well as facilitating weaving circles for groups of people at at significant moments of transition and connection.

Shelley is continually moved by the depth of presence, nourishment, connection and joy that emerges when these practices are shared in circle, spaces where hands are busy, stories are exchanged and relationships with materials, place and one another are woven together.
