TMJ Dysfunction Holds the Key Part 1 & 2

TMJ dysfunction is extremely common and in many ways is easier to take into consideration and address when it manifests with locally expressed discomfort. However, the TMJ realm can also play a substantial role in many other symptomatic manifestations, such as persistent headache and migraine patterns, pelvic imbalance and hip joint dysfunction as well as chronic imbalance and weakness in the ankles. In this latter group of imbalances the TMJ is often not regarded as a key player and at times completely overlooked as both TM joints might not be manifesting locally expressed pain and discomfort despite inherently held tension patterns that have a far-reaching effect.

These dynamics are often caused by a complex layering of physical and emotional triggers, which are directly interwoven with the feedback loop dynamics of the autonomic nervous system. Often subconscious emotional themes can activate hypertonicity within the muscles of the TMJ mechanism, thus causing teeth clenching (bruxism) at night or even during the day in its more extreme form. This hypertonicity in turn signals the sympathetic nervous system into further arousal, thus causing a reflex loop that can result in significant discomfort and dysfunction such as debilitating neck pain, headaches and pelvic imbalance.

As bodyworkers we can utilise very useful tools to douse the sympathetic fire that has stoked restrictive holding patterns, tension and often intense discomfort within the TMJ structure as well as its body wide ripple effects of structural and functional symptoms. This seminar series will take an analytical lens to the anatomy and physiology of the TMJ realm, and look at the reasons for TMJ dysfunction and its wide-reaching effect on the entire body. It will then highlight particular bodywork approaches, tools and protocols that address TMJ dysfunction and support the resolution of such a condition.

Presenter: Conny Pulvermacher

Conny Pulvermacher has been a clinical practitioner, yoga teacher and holistic health educator for more than twenty-five years. She holds qualifications and has undergone training in bodywork, nutrition and yoga, specialising in craniosacral therapy (biodynamic and structural). She runs a busy clinical practice at Elemental Health in St.Ives, Sydney, working with a diverse client base. Her very favourite clinic visitors are newborns but she also loves supporting those who have travelled the life journey for many decades.

Conny has developed an integrative approach to therapeutic practice combining the non-invasive approach of craniosacral therapy with myofascial release, positional release, acupressure, kinesiology and remedial massage to facilitate the integration of experience at multiple levels.

She structures nutritional advice and movement therapy as additional tools to empower clients with self-help ability within the rhythm of everyday life.

Conny has taught ATMS seminars Australia-wide since 2019 and has offered a wide range of integrative workshops in a variety of different forums focussing on holistic health, nutrition, movement and meditation.

Conny is currently the co-ordinator and co-teacher for the USA based Wellness Institute, offering three-year long diploma training courses in Craniosacral therapy held in Sydney.

Conny is a committed meditation practitioner. In her therapeutic practice and her lifestyle she holds a deep core belief: mind and body are inextricably interwoven with each other. When this unity is supported holistically, enabling a better balance within the autonomic nervous system, the inherent health held within every metabolism can express itself much more successfully. The commitment to that belief expresses itself in every level of Conny’s therapeutic practice and teaching work.
