Term 1: Hand plane basics & Mitered box making

Details

This Night Class is for students of all levels to develop your woodwork skills under expert tuition. Wednesday Night Class will be taught by skilled furniture designer and maker Clare Solomon. Wednesday night class will start with a set program to learn the basics and will then progress as a free program which allows you to design and make a small piece of furniture of your own choice.

  

About the project

In Term 1, we are going to make Koitoya popular item, "Jyubako" stacking box, to have fun using Japanese saws and Japanese planes. You will cut your materials to make boxes into your desired size. You can use the boxes for any purpose.

There will be a number of learnings through lectures and hands on project. You will be learning to use and understand Japanese hand plane including how to sharpen the blade. Japanese saw will be used to make a rough cut. You will use jigs to plane the accurate mitered joints.

Suited for beginners and entry level of woodworkers.

  

Learnings:

Simple drawing, Japanese hand plane, Japanese Saw, sharpening, glue up panels, router.

  

Term 1 dates & time:

 7 Feb – 27 Mar

18:00 to 21:00. 3 hours.

  

Fee:

$770.00 (Term fee $712 + materials $58)

  

Material fee:

Materials supplied for term 1 and 2. Otherwise, you will be charged as you go.

  

Tools:

Power tools will be used under guidance. Hand tools will be supplied. You are welcome to bring your own tools.

Machine:

Saw Stop table saw, bandsaw, drill press will be available under supervision.

By taking optional machine workshop, you will be inducted to use panel saw, jointer, thicknesser, mortiser, overhead router. (Please look at Short Courses)

  

Term 1 rough schedule:

Week 1: Introduction, Drawings, Rough cuts with Japanese saw.

W eek 2-3: Lecture "Hand plane", Miter cut with shooting board (end).

Week 3-4: Lecture "Sharpening", Miter cut with shooting board (sides).

Bottom panel - edging and glue up

W eek 5: Lecture "Router basics and safety" & cutting grooves.

W eek 6: Sanding. Assembly.

Week 7: Cutting keys, 

Week 8: Final finish.

  

Development program:

This night class is part of a development program which eventually leads to the design and making of your own small project. So, long term commitment will be recommended!

Term 1: Joinery practice - Mitered box making with Western hand plane.

Term 2: Joinery practice - small box making with hand chisels.

Term 3 onwards: small furniture design and making / Setting up your own plane/chisels.

  

About Night Class:

Night Class is for students of all levels to undertake their own project under expert tuition. Beginners are welcome as well as experienced woodworkers with focused theme. Classes are limited to 10 students. You can belong to one of night class, Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. In the past, students have made amazing variety of works!

  

There are 7 to 10 classes per term, with 4 terms per year. Time 18:00 to 21:00. 3 HOURS.

For Wednesday Night Class, Term 1 and 2 will be set program and from Term 3 you can chose what you want to make.

When you happened to miss your class being sick or busy with your work or family matters, you can join Tuesday or Thursday Night to make up your missed night.

For long term student we have extra discount when you stay more than a year (full 4 terms) paying term fee.

When you have a holiday and have to miss the most of term, you can enroll as Pay As you Go student to keep your position in the night class, or you can decide to get back on the waiting list. Usually, we put you on the top, not the bottom.

WEDNESDAYS: 31 JUL – 18 SEP 2024, 8 x 3 hours session, 8 weeks.

TERM  4 $623+ materials fee

WEDNESDAYS: 9 OCT – 20 DEC 2023, 7 x 3 hours sessions, 7 weeks.

Staff:

Main lecturer: Clare Solomon (Koitoya, they/them)

Clare was raised in Canberra and started their woodworking journey nailing timber together in my parents' shed.

From 2013-2016 I studied Furniture making at the School of Art and Design at the Australian National University. 

Clare has worked at Koitoya since 2017 where we make all kinds of interesting one-off pieces. And had the opportunity to start teaching as assistant teacher in 2019 and as a lead teacher in 2020.  Clare hae always enjoyed teaching and helping people complete their projects.

In 2023, Clare traveled to Japan for 6 months to improve my woodworking skills.  Clare spent 4 months in Takayama city studying at Shinrin Takumi Juku under Mr Kogiso and Mr Hirano.  After that Clare spent a month as an artist in residence at The Mt Fuji Wood Culture Society learning From Tak Yoshino. 

      


Assistant teacher: Midori Tanaka (Koitoya)

Midori has trained her furniture making skill at Shinrin Takumi-Jyuku, in the same school Hiroshi graduated. She also has very good knowledge about design, studied her Bachelor and Master of Architect in Chiba University. She is working for Koitoya as furniture maker from April 2023. She will be an assistant teacher to support Clare when Wednesday class has numbers more than 7 students.

Parking

Please park your car in front of our workshop.

We officially have two parking spots. We will be using the next-door unit's car park, which will be usually available for the night class. In rare case that parking space are not available, please talk to the tutor.

Way to the workshop

18 Maryborough Street is a battle-axe block, located inside of the block, so you will be walking through the driveway that leads to the block from Maryborough Street.

The driveway has 2 accesses, one next to Burning Log, and one next to Sunrise Church.

Unit 4 is a blue painted building on the right-hand side of the block of units.
