Welcome to Newman - Mt Whaleback Mine Tours

Come along to our Welcome to Newman event and take a tour of the world’s largest single open-cut iron ore mine.

Discovered in 1957 by veteran prospector Stan Hilditch, the iron ore deposit was named Whaleback because it resembled the shape of a humpback whale.

The Shire of East Pilbara and BHP are happy to offer two exclusive mine tours of the iconic BHP Mt Whaleback mine. Bookings for the mine tours are essential and available at a discounted rate of $5 for individuals or $15 for a family (including two adults and two children). Buses will depart from Kangaroo Oval promptly at 1:30pm and 3:00pm.
