Event description

With a world that seems increasingly unpredictable and chaotic, we need practices that help us to be with groundlessness. In the words of Pema Chödrön, being with groundlessness and making friends with our demons “leads to a very simple, understated relaxation and joy.” The things that challenge us in life can stifle us or help us grow. When we see challenges as our teachers, they can lead to acceptance and happiness with what is. By entering the cave of the heart, we can transform threat into a healthy challenge.

This is a series for our times and will include staying with our present experience even when it feels uncertain and troubling. We will use Pema Chödrön’s book When Things Fall Apart as our inspiration and guide and explore the themes of relaxing as it is, working with chaos, developing intimacy with fear and seeing the path of practice as the goal itself. Included will be gentle soothing movement, dharma talks and discourse, seated meditation, and an immersion in the healing sound of Nichol’s voice and harmonium.

Nichol Joy Chase, ERYT-500, YACEP, TSM, BM, is a yoga and meditation educator, and musician for whom singing, movement and contemplation is integral to life. She is a Garrison Institute Fellow alum, and developed a new trauma-sensitive yoga program for her capstone project. Nichol is the founder of the Wisdom Building Method Yoga School as well as a faculty member and teacher trainer for The Mazé Method Yoga School, Nest Yoga School, Love Story Yoga, and Hot Spot Yoga.

Nichol’s artistic experience includes more than a decade of Royal Academy ballet training and specialization as an operatic Coloratura Soprano, earning the Bachelor of Music degree with a major in Vocal Performance from the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music. Nichol’s study of yoga piqued an interest in bhajan and kirtan from the Indian musical tradition, resulting in the addition of the harmonium to her repertoire for accompaniment. She continues to study mantra, bhajan and kirtan along with a vast array of Western musical styles.
