Event description

Deep Rest & Active Hope with Nichol Chase

Encountering difficulty and challenge is never pleasant. Yet, these times present an opportunity for growth. As Buddhist scholar Joanna Macy says, approaching difficulty with curiosity opens us to “the unsuspected deep well of patience and diligence” within us. This is certainly easier said than done, yet there are contemplative practices that can help one turn toward and lovingly engage with challenge.

What we need to learn to do in this time is dance with challenge. Lovingkindness is the music for this dance. And ideally, this dance moves us through periods of deep rest and periods of active hope. Deep rest is an act of self-love – it helps us to recharge and gives us the reserves needed to show up and do good work. It is not selfish; it is necessary. As Tricia Hersey, the founder of The Nap Ministry says, “We must believe we are worthy of rest. We don't have to earn it. It is our birthright. It is one of our most ancient and primal needs.” Deep rest and active hope are we need right now. Both beget the other, and both are rooted in love.

We will discuss and experience practices of deep rest and active hope. Practices will include guided meditation and sound healing with harmonium and Nichol’s voice.

Nichol Joy Chase, ERYT-500, YACEP, TSM, BM, is a yoga and meditation educator, and musician for whom singing, movement and contemplation is integral to life. She is a Garrison Institute Fellow alum, and developed a new trauma-sensitive yoga program for her capstone project. Nichol is the founder of the Wisdom Building Method Yoga School as well as a faculty member and teacher trainer for The Mazé Method Yoga School, Nest Yoga School, Love Story Yoga, and Hot Spot Yoga.

Nichol’s artistic experience includes more than a decade of Royal Academy ballet training and specialization as an operatic Coloratura Soprano, earning the Bachelor of Music degree with a major in Vocal Performance from the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music. Nichol’s study of yoga piqued an interest in bhajan and kirtan from the Indian musical tradition, resulting in the addition of the harmonium to her repertoire for accompaniment. She continues to study mantra, bhajan and kirtan along with a vast array of Western musical styles.
