Chapel Concert Series

Our Lenten Classical Concert Series invites the community into three evenings of depth, vulnerability, and renewal:

Maverick Voices (Ivalas Quartet, March 12) brings together two bold and boundary-pushing works that speak across centuries. The program features Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat major, Op. 130—a masterpiece of striking contrasts, from playful dances to the profound intimacy of the Cavatina—alongside Deliverance, a transcultural quartet blending Persian classical melody with West and North African rhythms. Where Beethoven stretches form and emotion to their limits, Deliverance traces a journey from fragmentation toward renewal through microtonal color and layered polyrhythms. In the spirit of Lent, both works move through tension and vulnerability toward a deeper, hard-won sense of grace.

Present Tense (Boyd Meets Girl, March 19): The acclaimed Australian-American cello and guitar duo Boyd Meets Girl invites listeners into a reflective musical journey that gently crosses genres and traditions. Rooted in the intimacy of classical masterworks and enriched by imaginative reworkings of contemporary songs, their program moves fluidly between reverence and reinvention. Thoughtfully crafted selections by today’s composers add depth and resonance to the evening. In this Lenten season, their performance offers space for stillness and self-examination, culminating in Radiohead’s haunting Present Tense, a meditation on presence, vulnerability, and grace.

Comedy & Reverie (Sam Gray and Ben Nylander, March 26) explores wit and wonder through a vibrant program of selections for violin, viola, and piano. The comic irony of Korngold’s Much Ado About Nothing, Schumann’s erratic Märchenbilder, and Lalo’s wild Arlequin conjure up images of an ensemble of stock characters, fairy tales, and fantasies. Behind these masks of performance lie the dreamy, introspective musings of Debussy, Chausson, and Reinecke, a sharp contrast to their extroverted counterparts, and a window into the source of creativity. As a whole, these works weave together a vivid tapestry of humor, performativity, and poetry.

All concerts begin at 7:30pm. Join us in the chapel and experience the gift of live music in a setting designed for listening deeply. All are welcome to enter this season through sound, reflection, and shared presence.
