Description

Explore more than a century of history at West Overton’s summer camp! Kids ages 8-12 can have fun with historical hands-on activities, crafts, games, and demonstrations that provide an up close look at the past. Each day has a different theme commemorating America’s 250th. Activities are presented by West Overton Village educators and our exciting community partners.

  • America invents - explore the history of American innovation through fascinating artifacts in our Museum

  • America creates - get creative and celebrate the tradition of American arts and crafts

  • America grows - learn about historic food production and agricultural tools and technologies

  • America builds - see demonstrations of historic trades and discover the resilience of American people and communities

  • America preserves - discover how we preserve the past and care for the land today

On Friday afternoon, families and friends are invited to celebrate the end of camp with a slideshow of the week’s activities and some sweet treats!

We look forward to bringing back partners from last year including Fort Allen Antique Farm Equipment Association, and will announce more soon!

Camp Policies and Procedures

  • Camp Activities

At West Overton summer camp, campers will enjoy a variety of hands-on activities, crafts, and demonstrations during the week. Activities will take place both indoors and outdoors.

  • Sign-in / Sign-out Procedures

Sign-in and sign-out will take place at the Museum front entrance (the large brick building with the Old Farm Pure Rye mural).

Anyone picking up a camper will be asked to present identification every day (this includes parents/guardians and other authorized adults). Appropriate forms of identification with photos include driver’s license, passport, or work ID with full name. The camp registration form includes a space for you to list all "authorized adults" allowed to pick up your camper(s).

In the event you have a new person signing out your camper at the last minute, we will have a form for you to fill out to authorize the new person.

Campers are not permitted to leave unless accompanied by an adult.

    Sign-in: 9:50 - 10 a.m.

    Sign-out: 3 p.m.

  • Camper Safety and Expectations

    Camper Behavior Expectations

Camp is an exciting opportunity to learn about history, make friends, and have fun. At West Overton Village, we are committed to being a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for everyone.

Everyone at camp is expected to follow behavior expectations, including respecting themselves, others, the museum / historic site, and camp materials. Any threats, acts of violence, or violation of camp policies or site policies will be prohibited. Campers must remain under adult supervision and in designated areas at all times. West Overton Village reserves the right to dismiss campers from the program without a refund.

    Clothing and Footwear

Campers should dress for a variety of fun indoor and outdoor activities, including arts and crafts, games, and short hikes around the historic grounds. Many of our activities take place rain or shine, so campers may be outside in sunny, hot weather or in rainy, muddy conditions. Please make sure your camper comes prepared for the day’s weather.

All extra clothing and personal items should be clearly labeled with your camper’s name. For safety reasons, all campers must wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain and around historic buildings. Flip flops, sandals, open-back shoes, and Crocs are not permitted. Campers who arrive without appropriate footwear will not be able to participate in certain activities. In such cases, a parent or guardian will need to provide proper shoes before the camper can join in the day’s programs.

    Personal Items

Campers are welcome to bring certain personal items to camp, such as backpacks, lunchboxes, water bottles, jackets, sweaters, sunscreen, and insect repellant. Extra items should be clearly labeled with your camper’s name.

Please leave items like toys, electronic games, music players, cell phones, cameras, etc., at home. These items can be a distraction at camp and we do not have a secure place to store valuables. If personal items do become a distraction, camp staff will confiscate the property and return it to a parent/guardian at the end of the day. West Overton Village is not responsible for lost items.

    Sunscreen and Insect Repellant

Sunscreen and insect repellent are encouraged for outdoor activities. Staff may not apply sunscreen or insect repellent for campers, so please be sure to apply in the morning before arrival. Campers may apply sunscreen and/or insect repellent to themselves. Sunscreen and insect repellent are not provided.

    Food Allergies

On the registration page, please list your child's food allergies and any accommodations your child may require because of the allergy. Special seating arrangements will be made during lunch for campers with allergies.

    Medication

Staff and other personnel at West Overton Village are not permitted to dispense medications for campers. If a camper must take medication during camp, arrangements must be made for an adult to come and dispense medication.

  • Lunch and Food/Drinks

All campers must bring a packed lunch each day. We do not provide lunch or snacks for campers. Refrigeration and microwaves are not available.

Campers should also bring a refillable water bottle marked with their name.

Campers are not allowed to share food with other campers due to dietary / medical restrictions. You will be notified if camp activities involve food.

  • Cancellation Policy

If you cancel your registration at least 14 days before the camp (by end of day on Monday, July 14), you will receive a refund equal to the cost of the camp less a $25 service fee. Cancellations made less than 14 days in advance will not be refunded.

West Overton Village reserves the right to cancel summer camp. In this case, a full refund is given.

  • Walking Field Trips to Fort Allen

Camp includes two walking field trips to our neighbor's property, Fort Allen Antique Farm Equipment Association. This is a short walk from West Overton along a mowed grass path.
