WHAM! A Totally '80s Soap Opera
A play by Martin Matamoros
WHAM! is a campy ’80s soap opera about two best friends, one very complicated gay awakening, and enough booty shorts to leave very little to the imagination.
George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley meet as teenagers, form a pop duo, and set out to become famous. Along the way, feelings get confused, friendships get tested, and George discovers that becoming a pop icon is considerably easier than figuring out who you are. Throw in Boy George, screaming fans, family secrets, drugs, jealousy, questionable fashion choices, and the relentless pressure to keep up appearances, and suddenly everyone has something to hide.
Part pop fantasy, part queer coming-of-age story, and part gloriously overheated soap opera, WHAM! dives into the mythology of ’80s pop stardom, where the hair is huge, the emotions are bigger, and nobody is saying what they really feel. It’s a story about fame, friendship, desire, and the very complicated business of becoming yourself while the whole world is watching.
