FAQs
- What is the national immunisation schedule?
The national immunisation schedule is a programme developed by the New Zealand government that sets out which vaccines are recommended, and when. It is designed to protect tamariki and adults from a range of serious but preventable diseases. Most vaccines on the schedule are free for eligible people.

- When does my pēpi need their first immunisations?
The schedule starts at six weeks old. This is when your pēpi receives their first vaccines, which protect against diseases like whooping cough, polio, and hepatitis B. Early immunisation is important because young pēpi are most vulnerable to serious illness.

- What vaccines are free in Aotearoa?
Many vaccines are fully funded, including those for whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella, meningococcal disease, HPV, influenza, and more. Our nurses can walk you through exactly what is available for you and your tamariki based on age.

- Are vaccines safe?
Yes. Vaccines used in Aotearoa are thoroughly tested and approved by Medsafe, New Zealand's medicine safety authority. They are continuously monitored for safety. Like any medicine, some tamariki may experience mild side effects such as a sore arm or a slight fever, but serious reactions are very rare.

- What if my tamariki has missed some vaccinations?
It is never too late to catch up. If your tamariki has missed any vaccines, a nurse can review their history and put together a catch-up plan. There is no judgement, just practical support to help get your whānau protected.
