What Are We Still Getting Wrong About Civics Education in Australia?

Tuesday 13 October | 5:00–6:00 pm | Online via Zoom

Despite decades of curriculum development, policy attention and research, concerns about Civics and Citizenship Education in Australia remain stubbornly familiar.

So, what are we still getting wrong?

In the first event in the Future of Civics and Citizenship Education: AARE Provocations series, Keith Heggart (University of Wollongong) will present a short animated provocation examining some of the persistent assumptions, tensions and challenges shaping civics education in Australia.

Sandy Killick (Democracy Matters) will then offer a 10-minute response before the conversation is opened to participants.

This is not intended as a traditional webinar. The provocation and response are starting points for a wider discussion about what we have learned, what continues to be overlooked, and what might need to change.

Session format

5:00 pm — Welcome and Acknowledgement of Country
5:05 pm — Animated provocation
5:15 pm — Response from Sandy Killick (Democracy Matters)
5:25 pm — Questions, comments and open discussion
5:55 pm — Closing remarks and introduction to the next event

Presenter: Keith Heggart (University of Wollongong)
Respondent: Sandy Killick (Democracy Matters)

This event is free and will be held online via Zoom. Registration is required.

The session will be recorded for later hosting on the AARE website.
