OCEAN LOVERS TALKS - WHAT ARE WHALES TELLING US?
Are whales in trouble? What are these majestic creatures telling us and how can we help them? This panel will share how researchers are deciphering whales bodies and their biology and share what this tells us about their health and wellbeing. Join our panel of whale researchers and policy experts to uncover the mysteries of whale biology and behavior to understand how we can help them.
Join Dr. Vanessa Pirotta, a passionate and experienced science communicator who loves making science accessible. Vanessa has represented Australia internationally as the national winner of a world-renowned science communication competition known as Fame Lab, where she placed second in the world. She has spoken as an invited marine mammal expert at the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation in Rome, Italy and has presented her research via the TEDx platform.Â
Dr Olaf Meynecke developed advanced short- and long-term tagging methods in marine environments, receiving several awards for his work. He continued working in the marine environment as a post-doctoral researcher with the Griffith Coastal and Marine Research Centre on the Gold Coast and won multiple research grants for projects in coastal ecology. He is currently managing and advancing the Whales and Climate Program, an international research initiative on the impacts of climate change on whales, and is the CEO and co-founder of Humpbacks & High-Rises Inc. a NFP organisation dedicated to marine mammal research and protection.
