What is Lithography? - Casual Session at Grey Hand Press (2026 November)
Description
Join us for a bird's-eye-view session demonstrating the basics of fine art hand-lithography in a short-form, casual environment. This workshop will offer a quick tour of the process to help demystify the technique, explore its aesthetic possibilities — and ultimately help you understand whether it's a technique you want to practice yourself, work with an experienced printer to produce your work, or simply better understand what went into making the image when you see it on a museum or gallery label. Over two hours we will take a simple shared drawing on a prepared lithographic stone through processing and onto paper. During wait times in the process we will show-and-tell finished works and experiments by GHP staff, students, artists, and our personal collections, illustrating the sheer diversity of the medium. We will discuss the different forms of litho to choose from, what makes each of them special, and where you might choose to access your next steps in learning. There will be little take-away samples of printed matter and time permitting a chance to run the press yourself.
What to bring: note-taking materials if desired. Optional: apron, though this will be a low-mess session and we'll have a few to go around!
What's provided: all necessary drawing materials, sample paper, coffee and tea.
In an effort to maximise accessibility these sessions are run at minimum cost to cover material and refreshments with flexible "pay what you can" or "pay what you think it is worth" pricing. Any contribution above the base ticket price furthers our mission to offer affordable educational programming and resources in the years ahead.
