Event description

Labour market information (LMI) is a core component of career interventions. It distinguishes the work of career professionals from other kinds of helping. Yet, in current turbulent labour markets, career professionals often find it challenging to keep their knowledge current and mediate it effectively to different client audiences. Referring clients to LMI online is unlikely to maximize positive outcomes because expert mediation by professionals of its meaning for clients’ particular context is frequently necessary. This seminar will examine the nature of LMI and LMI systems and will highlight developments and innovations in LMI systems. It will identify barriers that hinder its effective use in practice and consider emergent debates and tensions. Suggestions for practice are also offered.

By the end of the seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand different definitions of LMI for practice.

  • Identify the structure and function of LMI systems

  • Explain the potential role of theory for this aspect of practice.

  • Recognise key ethical considerations.

  • Describe quality criteria for LMI.

  • Articulate benefits of using high-quality LMI in career guidance.
