Description

In our families and multicultural communities, staying connected is at the heart of daily life. When a loved one's communication begins to shift due to age, memory changes, illness, or moving between languages, staying connected can bring unexpected challenges. Connection does not have to end when words change.

This National Carers Week, the Association for Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) invites multicultural and multilingual carers to When Words Change: A Carers Week Conversation.

Supported by Carers WA, this gathering is an open community lunch created for carers to relax, share stories, and connect with one another in an informal setting.  We want to hear how you stay connected and navigate daily conversations as a loved one's memory, language, or health changes. What you share will directly guide how AfCAS develops future carer services and supports our volunteer visitors.

What you can expect on the day:

  • Be recognised, valued, and celebrated as a carer as part of National Carers Week 2026.

  • Share your reflections and stories in a safe, culturally respectful space, with zero pressure to speak if you prefer to simply listen.

  • Connect with other multicultural carers, AfCAS staff, and Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) volunteers.

  • Enjoy a complimentary light lunch, tea, and refreshments.

  • Learn more about community resources and support available through AfCAS and Carers WA.

Who is welcome? Carers from all cultural and language backgrounds who are supporting a family member or friend with dementia, age-related needs, disability, or chronic illness. AfCAS ACVVS volunteers and interested community members are also warmly invited.
