A new diagnosis in the whānau – whether it’s autism, ADHD, a disability or health condition – can bring a whirlwind of questions. What now? Where do we turn? Who understands what we’re going through?

This free online lunchtime session is designed for Selwyn parents, caregivers, and whānau who are supporting a disabled, neurodivergent, or health-impaired family member. Whether you’re right at the beginning or already aware of Parent to Parent, this session is for you.

Join Sophie Carter – a Christchurch-based parent of two autistic young men, and an experienced advocate and support worker – as she introduces what Parent to Parent offers. You’ll learn how they support whānau across wider Canterbury with free, confidential services that inform, connect, and empower.

At the end of the session, there’ll be an open Q&A – a chance to ask questions, connect with others, and share what support you feel is still needed in our region.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Sophie Carter is Canterbury born and bred, now living in south Christchurch with her fiancée Jess, 17-year-old son Lucas (who is autistic and non-verbal), and 14-year-old whāngai son T, who is also autistic.

Her passion for working in disability began at high school, volunteering at a local specialist education school – where she later worked for over 12 years in both support staff and whānau support roles. Sophie also provides private respite care, a job she loves.

Deeply committed to advocating for tamariki in Aotearoa, Sophie completed a Diploma in Child Protection in 2019. With more than 12 years of professional experience and rich lived experience as a parent, she brings both empathy and practical knowledge to her role with Parent to Parent. She’s passionate about helping whānau learn about and access support as early as possible.

In her spare time, Sophie enjoys whānau outings, weekend getaways, and a good book.
