Where in the World is Western Sydney? Lecture with Jodie Vo
Event description
Join the Centre for Western Sydney at Western Sydney University, Parramatta South Campus for an engaging lecture and Q&A with Jodie Vo (University of Sydney, School of Architecture, Design & Planning).
Jodie is a jack of a Favourites box of trades - trained as a 'spin doctor' with an interest in urban planning but currently working for the NSW state government in infrastructure delivery.
Her particular fields of interest are urban sociology, spatial inequality in cities, and 'Western Sydney' as a region and social construct. She has previously worked across Commonwealth and NSW Government agencies. She also currently lives in the Canterbury-Bankstown LGA so is she from 'Western Sydney' or not?
Western Sydney is one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions yet its “boundaries” are anything but clear. Jodie’s research "Where in the world is 'Western Sydney'?" How identities and boundaries can shape urban inequality and segregation: an empirical experiment report explores how shifting definitions of “Western Sydney” can blur the reality of inequality, affecting how resources are allocated and communities are represented.
Through data, storytelling, and critical reflection this lecture invites us to rethink how we define place and what that means for policy, identity, and equity.
