WHERE IS JOY? is the first full-length solo theatre work to centre Melbourne modernist pioneer Joy Hester—and we’re inviting you to play a crucial role in bringing this landmark production to life.
WHY JOY HESTER? WHY NOW?
Joy Hester is considered the only major woman artist of the Heide Circle, supported by legendary patrons Sunday and John Reed—yet her legacy remains underacknowledged.
Hester lived with disability, complicated by poverty, and died from cancer, aged 40 in 1960. Despite critical dismissal, she left an extraordinary oeuvre.
Blending direct storytelling with experimental design, the work amplifies Hester’s contributions to Australian art while redressing systemic gender bias and barriers faced by women and artists with disability.
Emma Louise Pursey’s lived experience of disability, loss, and resilience mirrors Hester’s, giving the work profound historical and personal urgency.
