Description

The Where We Are Youth Workshops are for kids and young people who are curious about the world and where they may fit in it.

These two, three-hour, Sunday workshops will introduce the basics of improvisation and movement creation through self-trust and team communication exercises. The workshops are built upon 3 Core Values: Confidence, Community and Courage.

Sunday 15th March: pre-professional and emerging dancers.

Sunday 29th March: 12-16 years.

Students will also get the rare opportunity to learn professional performance repertoire by choreographers and cast members of the Where We Are Triple Bill and are encouraged to attend one of the performances held on: 19th, 20th or 21st of March 2026.

Contemporary dance is an undefinable and revolutionary genre of dance that consists of collaborative choreographic methods that have been adopted worldwide.

Classes Included in the Workshops

  • Warm up class

A foundations-based contemporary technique class designed to progressively warm the body and prepare dancers for the physical and creative demands of the workshop. The class focuses on efficiency, articulation, and embodied awareness to support safe, full-bodied movement throughout the day.

  • Repertoire

Participants will learn and explore excerpts from ‘.OPPY’ by Miki L Rolton, ‘FERMATA’ by Ash Furniss, and ‘Echoes of Descent’ by India Stewart-Williams. This session offers insight into each choreographer’s movement language, dynamics, and performance quality.

  • Improvisation and Tasking

Using scores, concepts, and tasks drawn from the creative processes of the above works, dancers will investigate personal interpretations, decision-making, and creative agency. This session encourages curiosity, adaptability, and individual expression within structured frameworks.

FAQs

  • If I participate, can I watch the Where We Are performances?

Yes. If you book a ticket to either/both workshops you automatically qualify for a concession price ticket to any showing of the Where We Are Triple Bill performances.

  • How early can I arrive?

You can arrive at 9:15am onwards to warm up and mingle. The workshop finishes at 12:30pm and attendees must be picked up before 12:45pm.

  • Can I attend both workshops for free?

Yes. We are holding two free Sunday workshops that are two weeks apart - we encourage attending both workshops to learn both repertoire and technique.

The first workshop is targeted towards 16+ and the second towards high school aged students but if you are interested in both you are welcome to purchase tickets to both for free.

  • Who can come to this workshop?

These workshops are currently open to 12-16 year old students, pre-professional dancers or emerging artists. Of course if you are outside the age range but want to give it a shot, shoot us a message! Our first workshop is targeted towards older dancers and the second is more for our younger, high school aged artists.

  • What do I need to bring

Please bring a water bottle, notebook and pen. Also, please wear clothes you feel comfortable dancing in. We recommend wearing a shirt that covers your shoulders and, long pants and/or knee pads may be helpful for floorwork. If in doubt and you already own knee pads, throw some in your bag. For footware, feel free to dance with bare feet, socks, toe undies, or anything you are used to. If we notice the floor is too slippery for any of these options we will recommend bare feet.
