Whitehorse for Palestine presents "Naila and the Uprising"

In Australia since the end of 2025 there has been much controversy over the term "Intifada", its use, and there are calls for it to be banned.

What was the Intifada?

It's literal meaning is "shaking off". It is commonly used to refer to revolutions and revolts. Its most popular use in this context is the Palestinian Intifada. By 1987 the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip had been living under Martial Law for 20 years. Protests against this quickly boiled over into a widespread popular revolt that centered on boycotts and labour strikes. With the official leadership in exile or jail much of this was also organised and led by Palestinian women. These non-violent work stoppages were met with acts of collective punishment like the "bone breaking policy" from the IDF to try to end the strikes.

This documentary explores both of these strands of the story of the Intifada.

Funds raised from this event will be donated to PANZMA, the Palestinian Australian New Zealand Medical Association.

Following the screening will be a Q&A featuring Reem Yunis, Noura Mansour, and Nachshon Amir.

Reem Yunis is a Palestinian Australian, grandmother and teacher since 2001. She is a socialist and unionist and member of the executive of her AEU branch tireless fighter for Palestine.

Noura Mansour is Palestinian educator, political analysts, writer, activist, community organizer, from Akka. She is currently the national director of Democracy in Colour.

Nachshon Amir is a former Israeli army combat officer who was raised in a religious nationalist family but has been an outspoken advocate and active member of Free Palestine Melbourne for the past four years.
